Hello guys! I know I ain't the most prominent face around here, but I noticed that for all the traits and such that we have, there isn't a lot of reward in having SS in the true scenarios that occur with RP as there was meant to be with the original design. Often times I hear of the trait basically being ignored or moved around when they are high, and I personally feel this is a shame for a full trait that, as players, some of us sacrifice putting points into instead of other more combat-related traits.
To help to boost the rewards of this trait up, I have come up with a few ideas for particularly high SS characters that can help them make it in a combat-trait dominated world. Now, these are just ideas, but the intention behind them is clear and I think that should be the main focus on this read.
First idea :
"Fear of Repercussion" : A Skill that should require a higher level of SS
The idea behind this skill is to prevent the random selection, mugging and attacking of prominent characters with a high social status. In the real world, people do not typically mug those with prestigious positions, fame, or otherwise high status out of fear of what might come to them in return. In RP however, this can be a difficult idea to put into practice because of the variety of characters that are played on Sim. This skill would make it so that all Random, Unwarranted/Unprovoked attacks or negative attempts require a roll of Resolve .. The victim in mind with this skill getting a boost to their own resolve trait for this instance, perhaps +2. If the attempted fails this roll, they will not find the will/courage to continue their attempt for the remainder of the scene.
The idea is that most people with high SS are, undeniably, going to be weaker in other combat related stats, so it puts them at a major disadvantage when random fights occur, or they are the target of misdeeds. This should not happen in a realistic scenario as explained above, so this should help deter these rather noncombat-focused, usually diplomatic-RP centered characters from having to receive this sort of encounters.
The Unwarranted/Unprovoked would shatter should the person with the skill in mind actually be actively doing something that warrants an attack - Breaking and entering, excessive rudeness, attacking another player, stealing etc. Just being there and being rich, or looking a little pompous, or having a status however would bring make the skill come into play should someone decide these are wise reasons for attacking the "haves" of the island, as quoted from the trait description area of the site.
Now, I understand a few characters are bound to have some combat-related traits too, perhaps focused in magic or other stuff. For this reason I think it's highly recommended that, should this idea be taken into consideration, numbers are played with and a skill like this be discussed, or simplified/reduced from the original outline. That being said, I think the concept is excellent, and is good grounds for future works/considerations, if not inspiration.
My Second idea for a skill-based trait on SS :
"Armed Escort" : For those with EXTREMELY high (like, 9 or 10) SS.
This is exactly what it sounds like. An armed escort. People who have worked hard in RP to get these max/near-maxed ranks get a buddy-buddy that can help protect them. I am not too good at deciding stats or anything like that, but I do know they should be decently beefy, and that this skill should be MAINLY for protection. I would like there to be a point to be made that these guards cannot participate in an otherwise unlawful behavior - They are guards, not mercenaries. Therefore, their presence and use would only be consistent so long as the person with the skill in mind was not doing anything destructive. (I.E. Stealing, Attacking someone, Break and Entry etc.) Their purpose would be mainly against unlawful behavior on the skill owner themselves.
Yep, just these two Ideas I had in mind. If you lovely staffs find either of them interesting or worthy of expanding on, feel free to take a pick at them and play around with numbers or discuss requirements. My main hope is that every trait is substantial in RP, and that players that are not built for combat can still have a chance at the things they are built for without fear. I don't know the system nearly as well as the next guy, but I think it's worth a try at thought, since as it stands I have heard a bit of frustration over the trait in general.
Love,
