A simple explanation of a conversation I was trying to have about how I think the current rules and system for Unarmed combat seem unfair is as follows;
Strength is the application of your physical strength.
Fighting is your understanding about fighting and combat.
Yes? Yes...
Every hand to hand expert or martial artist or even street fighter is going to tell you that while strength is important, to be effective with your fists, you need to know what you’re doing. Knowing WHERE to hit someone is the difference between hurting them and hurting yourself with the same swing. That has nothing to do with how strong you are… In fact, even if you aren’t that strong, you hit the right spot and you can take someone out of the fight immediately and that is simply know-how.
Currently you need a Strength score of 5 just to use unarmed (your fists/kicks) for just doing Light damage without a weapon in hand. You need a 7 to do Medium damage, and a 9 to do Large, it's impossible to do Massive.
Per the outcry of my detractors when I brought this up, if we drop the strength requirement to less than 5, then it’s possible that a child could have the strength of an adult (They have a maximum trait cap of 4). This is not a horrible point, but arguably we need to consider this; We run on a system that has a scale that is uniform 1 through 10 across all races. A normal human is not as strong as a dragon at the best of times, but they can apply their strength differently, right? So the dragon may have a Strength of 3 and the human may have a Strength of 5 and thus the Human is -effectively- physically stronger than the dragon.
In short, suck it up, maybe a kid beat you because they grabbed a shiv off the street and got lucky dice... It could happen just as easily.
My proposal is that we change the requirements to requiring a 5 in Fighting and a 3 in Strength in order to deal Light damage with hand to hand or ‘Unarmed’ combat.
-5 in Fighting means they’re a ‘Trained’ fighter (They have half of the maximum cap for an adult, it tells me they’ve practiced at some point.) and they may know how to use talents they’ve learned to apply damage to a target with hand to hand.
-Literally the mechanic we use for melee and -hitting- with hand to hand is that it’s rolled with Fighting, not Strength (unless we’re grappling, but that’s universal and makes sense), and it's already common knowledge that you don't have to hit hard to hit well.
-In turn, we can change the scale of the damage from 5 minimum to 9 maximum (ending at Large) to 6 Medium, 8 Large, 10 Massive. This gives an easy ladder to run off of and it makes Unarmed combat a viable option if someone wants to play a literal brawler since the synergy between Unarmed Hand to Hand and Grapple goes better together.
I'm down for feedback, but this is a better explanation of what I was going for earlier when I brought it up.
