Searching for roleplay sims, fantasy sims in particular yields some strange results (in my opinion). Some of these legitimate Fantasy roleplay sims have amazing populations that constantly stay very high. The strange part is these other sims have the worst rule sets, the worst builds, and the worst staff you will find typically. You can go to these sims and ask players. "You like this sim a lot?" and often the replies are something similar to..
"Yeah, there are lots of players. But avoid the orcs, and the staff."
"Don't play an Elf, you'll get gang raped a lot."
"Don't join the X faction, Tuesday's are now going to be kill X faction night each week."
"Make a dragon, otherwise everyone else will kill you."
"Dwarves are weak to magic and poison, but otherwise okay."
"It's great, just don't roleplay with X person, they will ban you if you out roll them."
"Don't get attached to your first character, they always kill off your first as hazing."
Now some of these are entirely made up for dramatic effect, however almost half of them are either literal comments or paraphrased from literal comments. Along with comments like these from their own player base you will visit their page and discover they butcher very well established lore, entirely forget very core important things from the site, or even have huge glaring contradictions on their sites. Often contradictions will be in the same paragraph or very near to each other. Other times you will see rules so lax that you wonder how anyone could possibly have fun in immersion. Fantasy settings with people running around in modern clothing, weapons, etc.
My point is how in the heck do these places not only survive, but thrive beyond what seems logical. How does a sim that boasts 20+ on low traffic hours, and 60+ during 18 hours of the day so obviously stink in every way, including to their own player base? It's like some weird irony.
Anyhow, without naming names or pointing fingers, maybe you have an honest take on this that would shed some light on the matter, maybe we could tap into it somehow while retaining respectability, continuity, and fun.
