Hey-lo!
I noticed that upon the first sign of someone casting other characters immediately become in at least defensive if not offensive mode. I feel that certain schools of magic; Divination, Mind, some thaum and possibly some luck, would become more viable if there were ways to make it hard to detect with proper rp. Many spells, such as the instill spells and imposed demand are not quite useful since the person you are instilling or imposing knows you are doing it and thus knows they are not truly in love, but they are still following the magic to be in love. Some of it just doesn't make sense, and makes having those spells somewhat useless.
Thank you very much!

Hello! We allow various ways to cast magic within Valesk. What is required is that an approved spellcasting component be used, however we have an entire list which should allow flexibility. isleofvalesk.weebly.com/spellcasting-in-valesk.htmlIf one were to cast via runes (writing them out for example) and say did so by tracing their finger along the bartop whilst others were watching a brawl, probably no one would realise. If you chant words, use body motions, have sparkling light etc these things would give you away more easily. As for general IC awareness. The components are required as a matter of lore as well as clueing players in ooc that something is about to go down. Icly though, not every character should be sensitive to magic to be able to sense it's getting whelmed for use (though we do have a lot of magic types). So it really comes down to how your character casts, how sensitive to magic other characters are, how superstitious or suspicious if they aren't sensitive to magic..... And how fair the other player is ooc. As far as how the staff has set up the casting, there are plenty of ways to try to cast unawares while following the rules. But this is like that issue of the bandit coming around and suddenly everyone has on eye on them. How do you know they need to be watched? Chances are you don't. How do you know someone is about to cast a spell? Well.... The players need to look at how it is being cast and then fairly determine if they would be aware of what is truly going on IC. As for your example, the character should absolutely think they are genuinely in love IC. Kind of defeats the point otherwise. Imposed demand, while they might remember you told them to do something, how do they know it's magic? In truth, if the spell is successful they probably shouldn't be thinking about /why/they are doing the order at all. Just doing it. Magic is meant to defy the rational, so tell these guys to get their characters logic out of the mischief. Lol

Thank you so much for the explanation. I was wondering, when it comes to using herbs, as an example of that type of casting, can the herbs just be held and manipulated in what would seem to be a normal fashion or should they be used in a more abnormal way? The clarification on the mind magic spells help a lot! I was unsure of how it worked in a practical sense. Again, thank you.

The use of herbs etc should be something akin to say witchcraft or shamanism. Example : burning an incense of dragon root and demon essence to activate the magic for a spell.
