Merfolk Sub Species Information
Within the Isle of Valesk, there are many breeds of Merfolk that inhabit the rivers and underwater caves. Little of these Merfolk is known by the landers other than the dangers they provide to the waters. The merfolk, however, have been keeping records for centuries about themselves, their culture, and origins. This guide to the sub species of Merfolk within Valesk and it's surrounding islands and landmasses can be found ONLY in the Merfolk study within the Rusalka Caves. This compendium of artwork, lore, and biology of sub species is integral to the Merfolk and is carefully guarded.

{Note that regardless of story, all sim rules apply as well as trait and character creation guidelines. Even if in LORE, a Hunter (see below) has the strength to pull a hull of a ship apart, they must still follow sim rules and trait levels.}
Sirens:
Sirens: Aquatious Hominus Adversai
Origin: Hokoth
Story:
Many many myths have been told of Sirens. Many different stories and folktales that are all either fake, or so far diverged from the truth, there is nothing but myth left. Sirens are a breed of Merfolk that have a lust for blood. Sirens are born with some sort of need for sentient blood. Upon inspection of their bodies, internally, they seem to have very thick blood. While this doesn't seem to cause them any physical problem, it gives reason to their diet consisting predominantly of raw meats and blood. Perhaps their blood is missing some sort of natural vitamin or nutrient that they require to survive. Without the medical ability to know, there is no way to determine if this is the cause. Rabid when hungry, it seems their need for blood is linked to their mental state in some way. Perhaps this is like a starving dog that will ravage even the worst food for sustenance when hungry. Otherwise, their bodies and nature are akin to Mermaids and Mermen and this thirst for sentience and thick blood are the only real difference. Some have a short temperament and some even have a desire to trick the creatures they hunt into a comfortable, almost lusty moment before they attack.
Tritons:
Tritons: Aquatious Hominus Verisai
Origin: Hokoth
Story:
Like Sirens, Tritons were born of the Hokoth Isle within the Dread Isles. Strong, powerful, and thick headed. Tritons are a select breed of Merfolk that are considered blessed by the sea gods and descendant of them. Known for their gigantic bodies which in tail form can reach up to 22 feet in length. In legged form, most stand over 7 feet tall, barefoot. Skilled in militaristic strategy and logistics, Tritons are the perfect fighters once of age and given a specialized training. Short of temper and holding the wrath that could rival a Siren, they are not a breed to trick or trap. Some myths call them the heralds of the ocean, but this might just be a story developed of their habit to call upon a conch shell horn before battle or as a warning to other mer that danger is near; be it of the sea or of the land.
Mermaids:
Merfolk (maids and men): Aquatious Hominus
Origin: Lynea
Story:
The most gentle and playful of all Merfolk, Mermaids and Mermen are fun loving creative creatures that hold a certain innocence in their personality that could easily lead them getting into trouble. While there is little known of how they formed, be is lovers of the water learning to adapt like Aquatic Elves, or a curse from the gods, this breed has certainly learned to make the best of their fish tailed nature. A love of all things shiny and pretty has led them to wander shorelines in search of anything landers might have dropped. Brilliant in the crafting room, and artfully skilled with anything crafted by hand, the Maids and Men of the sea are an integral part of the ecosystem as they tend to be skilled in trade and commerce with landers. Silver tongued is one way to describe them when they speak with landers, almost always getting what they want, and if they don't, they take it. Their only mean streak coming out when they want something they can't have.
Mermen:

Octomer:
Octo-Mer: Aquatious Sephilopi
Origin: Dread Isles
Story:
In ancient times, when the Dread Isles were barely discovered and even less was known of their strange shores, a breed of water dwellers formed within the dark waters and caverns below the Isles. This breed, with human halves upon their upper body, and the lower body of an octopus, were a race of highly feared hunters. Vicious and deadly, the Aquatious Sephilopi, or Octo-Mer are a race of reclusive solitary Mer.
Skin of an Octo-Mer usually dark purple, dark emerald, or black. While their upper bodies tend to match their lower in color, some of the more rare Octo-Mer have flesh toned skin on their upper bodies.
Having powerful tentacles that sometimes have a mind of their own, they are near perfect hunters that have found their lands on the shores and open ocean surrounding the Dread Isles, sometimes taking down ships out of pure rage from their hunting grounds being intruded upon by sailors.
Almost Strictly fish and krill eaters, they protect their territory with deadly force.
Minor Species
Manta: Manti briostri
Origin: Dread Isles
Story:
Mani Briostri or simply Manta, are a rare breed of Merfolk to see among the waters of Valesk. Born of the Dread Isles, they are a reclusive creature that stay among the reeds and sands of colder waters. While some prefer the warmer waters away from the Isles and have wandered to other lands where their nature and norms have been documented, most have remained close to their original home. Lower bodies of a manta ray, Manta's pectoral fins, triangular, can reach a maximum width of 22 feet. Their length can reach up to 18 feet. Generally very kindhearted and gentle beings, if angered or injured they will retaliate. Contrary to common believe, the Manta do not have a dart at the end of their tail, and have no real control over their tail as, upon inspection, it lacks bones, only muscles control its directional push.
Jelly-Mer: Aphylumi Cindari
Origin: Dread Isles
Story:
Among the frozen reeds below the waters of Dread Isles, another creature emerged with the lower bodies of deadly stinging Jellyfish. Seeming friendly in nature, they have the mind of a trickster. They can be the sweetest last thing you see if their playfulness goes too far. flamboyant as their bodies are floating, their blood runs as cold as the Isle's waters. Usually internally emotionless, they portray the emotions they see within others and mimic them at the moment of death to mock them as a sickening last trick.
Usually having their lower Jellyfish body clear to blue or purple or pink in tint, they have long stingers that extend for 'legs' just as a regular jellyfish would. These stingers hold an electric shock that can take down small sharks in a long enough exposure. Known for taking down ships or swimmers in groups called a "Smack", Jelly-Mer are certainly a breed to avoid.
Dolphin-Mer: Porpai Aqui
Origin: Lynea
Story:
The soft waters of the Lynean shores is home to may of the kinder breeds of Merfolk. Among these, a fun loving sub species of Merfolk with the tails of dolphins emerged along the shorelines and over cresting waves. These friendly creatures are very group oriented, a "Pod" of them together would be considered a family. Creative and crafty, these Merfolk are the artisans of the race.
Hunters (shark mer): -no other classification-
Origin: Dread Isles
Story:
Having no official sub species name other than Hunters, little is truly know of this breed of Merfolk. While they have the lower body of a shark instead of a normal fish, nothing else is known of their anatomy or what norms their breed consists of. Archaic and devoid of conscience or emotion, these predators are little more than rabid sharks with the upper body of a man or woman (though sometimes it may appear more fish in nature). Solitary, but sometimes hunting in groups called a "Shiver", they are dangerous enough to ravage a fleet of ships and strong enough to pry wooden hulls apart barehanded.
Orca-Mer: Aquatious Oricanus
Origin: Lynea
Story:
Born in the bright waters of Lynea like their Dolphin cousins, Orca-Mer are just as friendly and fun loving. However, unlike their Dolphin cousins, Orca-Mer have a mean streak inside of them, a short temper and slight vanity that can lead them into trouble and confrontation at times. Orca-Mer, usually larger than usual mer, tend to hunt on their own and live more solitary lives than most Merfolk. Even when finding themselves in shoals along with other Merfolk, they are one of the few breeds of Merfolk that never quite equate themselves to a group lifestyle as they are far too solitary.
Eel kin / Seasnakes: Anguil formai
Origin: Hokoth
Story:
Born of the dark, cold waters within the Dread Isles, some Merfolk have developed with the usual humanoid upper body, but their lower bodies take the form of either an eel or a sea / water snake. While the eel kin live primarily under water with little interest in the upper world, keeping only to themselves and the sands below Hokoth, the Seasnakes tend to wander between worlds. Amphibious in nature as most mer are, Seasnakes tended to explore the lands. Some places such as Hokoth confused these Seasnakes with the naga race. Personality wise, the Seasnakes and eels are solitary but can find themselves in a shoal. Impish and rather heartless, the Eel kin and Seasnakes fit into the culture of Hokoth.
