Most of this information will be regarded from an OOC standpoint as there are those who wish to have children in RP, and will need to know this information. Since there are SO many ways to have Merfolk babies, I am going to include all of them, and explain in detail the length, process, and developmental stages involved in each process. We should cover 3-4 different ways this could happen.
NOTE: WE DO NOT PERMIT CROSS BREEDS! If you are mating with another race, the child will ONLY be one race of the two, no cross breed mixture of the two. THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN.
if you are two sub species mating, for the sake of ease of decision, the female's race will generally take precedence, unless otherwise decided upon OOCly by the mates. BUT AGAIN, no cross breeds of the sub species. EVER.
Merfolk Developmental Stages & Reproduction Info
#1: Egg (Male)
This reproduction process usually occurs between two tailed Mer. Whether they are Siren, Triton, Orca-Mer, Dolphin-Mer, or Mermaid, or Merman. This process requires one male and one female to take place. (that does not mean you can't have a surrogate if you are two males or two females -this will be explained further down)
To begin this process, the male and female require mating to happen (yes ladies and gentlemen, that means Mer sex).
When the male and female mate, the male will take an egg from the female and store it within their own abdomen (aka: womb).
Once this occurs, the male will keep the egg within their abdomen for about three weeks.
After this point, the male will lay the egg within a nest and usually guard it for a few days to a week until the egg hatches.
Once the egg hatches, a baby(or babies) is/are born.
#2: Egg (Female)
This reproduction process usually occurs between two tailed Mer. Whether they are Siren, Triton, Orca-Mer, Dolphin-Mer, or Mermaid, or Merman. This process requires one male and one female to take place. (that does not mean you can't have a surrogate if you are two males or two females -this will be explained further down)
To begin this process, the male and female require mating to happen (yes ladies and gentlemen, that means Mer sex).
When mating occurs, the male will fertilize the females eggs and they will remain there within her abdomen (aka: womb) to ether grow or remain unchanged. Not all the eggs will take into children, but should it be more than one, they will meld into one egg and both be held there (like human twins who both grow in the womb, the children will both or all grown in the egg).
The egg will remain in the female's abdomen for about three weeks.
When the egg has incubated enough, it will be laid and after a few days to a week, the child(children) is(are) born.
#3 Live Birth (Female)
This reproduction process may occur with a female taking the child in her womb, impregnated by a male.
In this process, the female is generally in human form, and conception occurs as a human's would, the female carrying the baby.
However, once conception occurs, the baby begins to grown at an accelerated rate.
The process takes about 3-4 weeks, and then the child/children are born.
Notes on Reproduction:
#1. Two males may have a child, if one takes the first reproduction option and uses a female surrogate to take an egg from to incubate it within himself.
#2. Two females may have a child, if one is impregnated by another male in either the second reproduction option or the third option.
#3. No matter what, the child will only be ONE race and ONE sub species.
#4. Prominently, the reason for such an accelerated reproduction process is so that the RP flows and doesn't reach a stale point.
#5. Mating and reproducing are different things. With Merfolk, one needs to purposefully impregnate the other willingly for a child to form, it's doesn't happen by accident within Merfolk.
Developmental Stages
Merfolk have various developmental stages, and throughout their life, they grow and age differently at different ages. This will explain how that layout works.
#1. From conception to age 3, the child ages at an accelerate rate. The child developing in the womb within 3-4 weeks, and aging to a toddler within six months.
#2. Once the child reaches age 3, their aging drastically drops and they begin to age as a human would until they reach the age of 18.
#3. At the age of 18, their bodies are fully developed, physically and sexually, and are in essence an adult.
18, when a Mer is fully developed, is when the Mer begin their ability to take a land form (split tail).
#4. After the age of 18, most often their bodies begin to slow their aging and tend to stop aging somewhere between 18 and 30. Once 30 hits, there will never be any more aging within a Mer's body.
#5. Merfolk live to an age of 1000, no more. Once they have passed their marker of 30 years, their bodies simply stop aging until they reach 1000 and then they tend to die of old age.
Notes on Developmental Stages:
#1. Some have corresponded the inability to age once adulthood is reached to be linked in some way to how many sea creatures and plants tend to have long lives. Jelly fish have even been rumored to be immortal unless killed by dehydration (or stabbing... everything dies from stabbing).
#2. From an OOC standpoint, most of these developmental progressions are meant to keep the RP moving should someone be playing a child Mer or should someone wish to have children in RP.
