Valesk Merfolk History
The Merfolk of Valesk have a long, rich and unfortunately sad history within the Isle. The Merfolk, collectively known as the Rusalka, have been in Valesk since before records were kept. Living perpetually under the island's mountains and within underwater caves, the Merfolk have made their homes within the ruins of some long lost civilization that inhabited the island before memories or records recall.
The Merfolk had few instances of excitement or tragedy until the landers came. The waters were calm that day some ten years ago. Perfect sunshine that glistened on the surface of the water, but soon loud crashing and rumbling came from the underwater cavern and tunnels by the West side of the island. Most Merfolk, thinking it was a cave in, went to investigate. Clearing the rubble from the supposed cave in to get through the tunnel revealed the loss of five Merfolk who were spending their time there. This, a tragedy the Merfolk had not experienced in many centuries, shocked and saddened them. Worse, when the bodies were dealt with and the tunnel cleared, the Merfolk surfaced to discover landers and construction, and the horrifying realization that the island was no longer theirs alone sank in.
The Rusalka monarch, Queen Ishya, called a court, and it was decided by Council and Kin that this would not stand. The fallen five who died from the landers construction would be reconciled and avenged in some way. Finding it was just and proper, the Queen agreed and, with her council, surfaced among the newly built docks within what would become Lower Aberwyth. She demanded their sovereign be brought to her the waters would not stand for such offense as this theft of home and hearth. The waters belonged to the Merfolk, and Queen Ishya demanded it be returned.
The landers were baffled and rushed to inform their Lady and council to prevent any more offense or open war from the newly discovered Merfolk. Lady Evangeline and Queen Ishya held heated and lengthy discussions on what should be done to handle this situation. After many hours over the period of some days, an agreement was met and tribute paid to the Queen of the Merfolk. Sadly, this would not be the end of tragedy for the Merfolk.
The morning after negotiations ended, another rumbling quake came through the waters toevery Merfolk from their nests. This day was soon to be known by the few Merfolk who survived as the Day of Red Rivers. The rumble had sent a turbulent wave throughout the waters. Most sleeping creatures were enraged and rushed towards the scene of the unsettling of their habitat. The Merfolk stood in their way unintentionally and this left them at the mercy of sharks, octopi, piranhas and an innumerable measure of other angered sea creatures. As the landers slept, the Merfolk were ravaged and murdered in their nests, leaving few to survive. Those who managed to either fight to land or fight off whatever creature tried to eat them could not forgot the massacre
Once the new day came, barely even a pink stain was left on the waters of Valesk and the landers were uninformed of this tragedy they themselves had caused. With so few left living to even remember what happened and many of them wanting to forget it all together, most left the island and found new homes, leaving Valesk's waters nearly uninhabited. The landers were completely unaware.
A decade passed, and the landers continued to develop the island, and gradually the Merfolk began to return. Here is where the Island's real story begins and the Merfolk start making their own history.
