Merfolk, by natural design, can split their tails and gain a legged form. There are many different regulations regarding shifting. Most of these are OOC rules, and all players must abide by these regulations.
Landwalking General Facts
- Merfolk on land suffer -1 to Strength, Hunstman, and Reflexes.
- Shifting (to tail or to legs) takes 3 IC roleplay posts.
- Merfolk may shift twice per day: once into legged form (or tail form) and once back to tail form (or legged form).
- Merfolk are able to shift when they reach maturity.
Landwalking
Landwalking is a way for Merfolk to reach out to the landers as well as purchase things they would be unable to get in the water. Landwalking also provides Merfolk the option to get a job or to help out others while spending their time on land.
However, Merfolk cannot spend all their time on land. Merfolk bodies are not created for the harsh dry environment of land. Being out of the water for more extended periods of time can lead to serious problems in a Mer's health. The progression of ailments are as follows:
Please take this into consideration when you are roleplaying on land. It is difficult to suggest exact timing because scenes do not follow real-time (i.e. Going to the market to buy string should take a half-hour, but roleplaying the scene with 3-4 other people takes 3 hours). Just use common sense!
Splitting tail, as it's called, is also not the easiest or most care free task to preform. Shifting is a painful task that takes time (3 RP posts) to complete. Some species, such as Octo-mer, have even a harder time, as they do not have the tail like a regular Mer and their tentacles must then create their legs. This, for them, is far more painful, and challenging.

- Firstly, the body begins to dry out and crack.
- Then the Mer becomes weak and has difficulty breathing as dehydration sets in.
- Finally, the Mer becomes incapacitated and will likely die of dehydration if not returned to water.
