RP Log of casting the Ward:
[14:13] Meditation is a good way to get in the mood as it were, so an hour of contemplation on her task has prepared Gemma for her first step as Valkyrie's gardener. The blind Elf has familiarized herself with the path from the in to the great lady's home and garden, so Gemma is confident as she taps her way along the cobblestone. When she hears the tack of wood on wood when her walking staff hits the fence, she feels her way to the garden entrance and takes in a deep breath before starting.
[14:36] Gemma faces the garden at her full height, back straight and countenance assured of her purpose. She lifts her staff horizontally, holding it with both hands, arms outstretched. Gemma tips her head back, opaque eyes cast toward the sun-filled sky she cannot see, and her voice - although no louder than a whisper - is full of dedication and might. "Now as I pause for a moment and become still, sensing and accepting that where I am, the infinite presence of Nature is, know that the purpose of this ward is to protect Lady Valkyrie's garden from minds set on thievery. I seek only to insure the safety of this bounty that it may prosper to nourish more."
[14:43] Gemma lowers the staff and simply stands at the garden's entrance, breathing deeply and steadily for several moments. She then crouches down to scoop a hand full of dirt, which she brings to her face to inhale the scent of soil. The blind Elf murmurs against it, lips brushing against dirt, "This soil is now a shield. May it protect until Nature calls its power back." Then, using her staff to following the fence, Gemma begins slowly walking around the border of the garden, sprinkling the dirt along the same path.[14:48] When she comes to the first corner of the garden, Gemma pauses and turns toward the crops within. She holds her arms out in front of her, one hand clutching dirt and the other her staff. "Nature be with you, garden of Lady Valkyrie; stop, ye thieves, those who would take your bounty without permission. In all humility I beseech this protection, for we have tasted the harvest you so graciously provide." She then rounds the corner, once against sprinkling dirt along her way.
[15:12] At the second corner, the blind Elf once again stops and turns toward the garden. This time she kneels with her arms crossed over her lap, head bowed as her whispered voice speaks. "Yet those creatures, big and small, will be stopped with the power of your omniscient presence; and all tools of thievery are made harmless by the strength of your ancient might." Slowly, Gemma rises to her feet and resumes her dirt-sprinkling trek.
[15:16] Gemma pauses at the third corner of Valkyrie's garden and faces inward, lifting her arms over her head, tilting her wrist so the staff lays horizontally. "There are three roses around the heart of Nature; the first is beneficent, the second is omnipotent, the third is your sustaining will. You thieves must therefore stand under it, standing still and unmoved toward this garden. In the name of that power greater than all, you are commanded and made to stop!" Gemma brings the staff down swiftly to her waist and swings it outward, then pivots to continue on, sprinkling the remaining soil in her hand until she completes the circuit.
[15:24] Once she returns to the entrance of the garden and the last bit of dirt falls from her hand, Gemma brings her staff down with a solid thunk, wedging the tip into the corner of the tilled soil. "Should this garden be trespassed by thieves, Lady Valkyrie and I shall know." She lifts her other hand to the sky, her soft voice completing the ward with words of thanksgiving. "We give thanks for this good green earth and all that lives upon it. Thanks for soil and for the web of life within it that nourishes the grain, the wildflower and the trees. Thanks for the food we eat: thanks to all the beings whose death sustains our lives. Thanks to all who tend and grow our food, who plant and harvest, who bring it to us, who cook it for us with love. With your bounty, we will renew the land and feed the hungry. We will learn to live with open hands and open hearts, in balance and in peace. We give thanks."
